A Taoist named Cui accidentally releases the Treasure-Gathering Golden Toad while trying to study a heavenly scripture, setting off a chain of events that reaches far beyond the mortal world. Fascinated by human prosperity, the Golden Toad chooses to reincarnate as a man named Dou Zhanlong, hoping to experience life among ordinary people.
But escaping the consequences of heaven is not so simple. To avoid an approaching heavenly calamity, the Golden Toad splits Dou Zhanlong’s three souls and seven spirits, creating nine separate incarnations scattered across different places, timelines, and parallel worlds. Each version of Dou Zhanlong lives a different life, faces different enemies, and carries only a fragment of the greater mystery behind his existence.
Their fates are linked by a cruel rule: whenever one incarnation dies, another is born. Across these intertwined lives, Dou Zhanlong must endure a cycle known as the “Nine Deaths and Thirteen Calamities,” a sequence of trials filled with supernatural danger, destiny, and rebirth.
The story begins with the first Dou Zhanlong, whose choices become the starting point of a much larger journey across parallel time and space. Blending Chinese fantasy, Taoist mythology, reincarnation, and supernatural mystery, Golden Curse follows a fragmented soul struggling against heavenly fate itself.
